President Donald Trump has finally put his foot down when it comes to the firing of government employees.

Politico reports that Trump convened a cabinet meeting on Thursday in which he told his cabinet secretaries that they, and not Musk, had final say over whether to terminate federal workers in their departments.

“The president’s message represents the first significant move to narrow Musk’s mandate,” Politico writes. “According to Trump’s new guidance, DOGE and its staff should play an advisory role — but Cabinet secretaries should make final decisions on personnel, policy and the pacing of implementation.”

Musk, for his part, indicated at the meeting that he was on board with the new guidance.

Even so, Musk over the past several weeks has caused mass chaos by taking a hatchet to the United States Agency for International Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

The role of Musk as an unelected White House official who was somehow given power to enact mass firings in the federal government has drawn protests from around the country that target dealerships of his Tesla electric vehicles.
